The Journey of a Custom Commission: From Concept to Creation

Embarking on a custom commission is not just a process—it's a shared venture where your ideas and visions blend with my unique design and craftsmanship to breathe life into an incredible, unique piece of furniture. This post outlines a typical journey from the initial client contact to the triumphant delivery day.

Discovery: A Personal Connection. It all begins when a client reaches out, seeking a piece tailored to their vision. The journey starts with a visit to the client's space, engaging in open conversations about desires, needs, and practical considerations.

Crafting the Brief: Turning Ideas into Reality. After our initial meeting, I will retreat to the studio to craft a comprehensive brief. This document serves as a canvas, capturing the initial ideas, preferences, and practical details discussed during our meeting. I tend to find that my subconscious is far better than my conscious mind at sparking ideas and after absorbing the essence of the client's vision at our initial meeting, I will often let it do its thing for a few days and add details to the brief as ideas pop into my head and a vision for the piece starts to form.

Collaboration Unveiled: Refining the Vision. The brief is then presented to the client, opening the door for further collaboration. Clients provide feedback, refining the concept and adding personal touches, from preferred aesthetics to specific functionalities.

Approval and Commitment: Sealing the Partnership. If necessary, we may meet again to look at samples of timber leather, or other elements. Once the brief aligns seamlessly with the client's vision, and all details are meticulously addressed, approval is granted. At this point, a quotation is provided, and a commitment is solidified with a 40% deposit.

Design Phase: Sketches, Drawings, and 3D Magic. The studio becomes a hub of creativity as the design phase unfolds. Sketches, detailed drawings, and, at times, intricate 3D models take shape. This step allows clients to visualise the final piece and make any last-minute adjustments before the crafting begins.

Green Light for Creation: From Paper to Timber. With the design given the green light, my time is focussed in the workshop. I roll up my sleeves, working hands-on to transform raw materials into the envisioned piece. Each cut and contour reflects a commitment to detail and a genuine passion for the craft.

Progress Updates: Friday Insights. Clients become integral partners in the journey. Regular Friday afternoon updates provide glimpses into the workshop, showcasing the evolving creation and fostering a sense of anticipation.

The Unveiling: Delivery Day Arrives. As the final details are added, and the bespoke piece nears completion, delivery day dawns. The culmination of creativity and collaboration unfolds as the custom creation takes its rightful place, breathing life into the client's space.

Crafting a stunning piece of furniture is undeniably rewarding, allowing me to take pride in the culmination of countless hours of work. However, what truly fuels my passion and brings me genuine satisfaction is the sharing the journey and forming a connection with clients. I am fortunate that I am now able to consider many of them not just clients, but genuine friends, and it's these relationships that truly make my work fulfilling.
